Goals

The primary aim for this virtual workshop is to bring together members of the community, including lunar architecture systems and technology developers, dust mitigation technology developers, and scientists, to solicit input and discuss outstanding challenges and gaps in dust mitigation as well as identify areas that may be in need of future investment. The event's objectives will be to update the state of dust mitigation and identify technologies that are already available, define gaps in knowledge and research, get community perspectives, and gather input for future solicitations, including for the 2022 cycle. A report summarizing key outcomes of this workshop will be provided to NASA.

Program

The workshop will consist of a combination of invited presentations from NASA representatives and the community, contributed lightning talks, and breakout discussion sessions. Niki Werkheiser, NASA STMD and lead of the Lunar Surface Innovation Initiative, has agreed to be our keynote speaker. Talks will be brief (~10 minutes) with plenty of time for discussion and questions. The breakout sessions will enable deeper discussions of what technologies are already available, what current outstanding challenges and gaps in dust mitigation exit, whether in knowledge or technology, and identify next steps and priorities for future opportunities.

Get Involved

We hope you can join us at the workshop on February 4th and participate in the breakout sessions. Please register at the link above. Registration closes 01 February, so we can have an accurate number of participants and better organize the breakout groups.

We also have lightning talks (3 min), and you are invited to present! Please submit a short abstract (max 300 words) using the abstract portal on this event website by Friday, 22 January. It should outline your area of expertise, describe what you are working on, and identify the knowledge and technology gaps in dust mitigation that need to be addressed for you to move forward. If you have any questions, you can email jorge.nunez@jhuapl.edu, and if you are not already an LSIC member, please feel free to join us.
